About

Welcome to the online hub of the University of Sheffield’s Creative Writing Society!

Our goal is to help grow Sheffield’s student community of writers and encourage each other to becoming more confident in our voices and our writing. We also aim to provide a safe and fun environment to explore ideas and make friends.

We’re a society for every type of writer. We’re here for those writing a novel and those who write fanfiction occasionally for fun; for those who are nervous about starting out, and for those who want to know how to improve. No matter what level you’re at, this society is for you.

We hold weekly writing sessions and also host special events such as café writing socials. Check out our Instagram or Discord for updates on society events.

What do we do?

Want to know what we get up to? Here’s a list of some of the exciting things we’ve been up to this past year (2023/24):

  • We’ve collaborated with other university groups such as the DND society and the LGBTQ+ committee. Our writers learnt how to create DND characters and considered their approach to character creation in writing. We also had fun reimagining Romeo and Juliet with an LGBTQ+ spin. From chats about philosophy to imagining epic rooftop action scenes, the session was definitely a success.
  • Socials! We’ve put on a range of events, such as a movie night, ice skating, a night in Bar One, and a café writing social at Waterstones. If there’s any events you’d like to see us put on, please DM us.
  • We had a 24-hour write-a-thon in the Student’s Union in collaboration with other societies and got some free biscuits.
  • We’ve had relaxed writing sessions that often lead to group discussions about the love-hate relationship we have with our current work in progress.
  • We’ve also have themed writing sessions, such as our quiz night that somehow led to every participant winning a chocolate bar, and our crazy title writing challenge.

What’s next for this website?

We’re launching this website near the end of the 2023/2024 academic year as a place to share our new anthology from and also to lay the foundation for future projects. If you want to get involved in these future plans, or if you have ideas for this website going forward, you can join the 2024/2025 committee! Apply via the AGM application form in our Instagram bio. Our AGM is on the 18th of April. See you there!
